McLean, VA (January 6, 2011) — Interos Solutions, Inc., a Northern Virginia supply chain process and commercial technology optimization company that focuses on supply chain risk management, has been contracted by Social & Scientific Systems (SSS) to conduct a study exploring the distribution of medical devices within the United States as part of SSS' work with the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA is focusing on increasing traceability, visibility, and security in medical device distribution and use as part of its work on Unique Device Identification (UDI). The objective of the study on U.S. distribution and use of finished medical devices (DFMD) is to heighten visibility of medical devices throughout the U.S. thereby improving safety and security across all FDA stakeholders. Supporting CDRH's mandate to protect public health by ensuring the quality, efficacy, and safety of medical devices as well as the public with accurate, science-based information on the products it oversees, the study will enhance the FDA's knowledge-base of the medical device distribution from supplier to end-user and will enable the FDA to proactively address UDI-related device issues such as recalls, counterfeits, and other emergent scenarios. Interos will conduct the study in conjunction with SSS.
"An enterprise view of medical devices distribution is needed to enhance patient safety," said Jennifer Bisceglie, President, Interos Solutions. "More than any other stakeholder, the FDA needs to fully understand the breadth and depth of the network - or supply chain - and where best practices could be implemented for increased efficiencies, for improvement of traceability and visibility, and for better public health and safety overall."
